Father’s Day Fail: Our first RV Breakdown

That Father’s Day when the RV broke down 60 miles from the Grand Canyon and we ate tacos on the side of Highway 89A while waiting for the tow truck to drive us back the way we came.

We stopped after climbing a grade to check out a scenic outlook, and Allison called me back to the RV because it was spewing a hot red liquid. I popped the hood and the coolant appeared full, so after starting the RV and seeing the temp gauge in the middle of hot and cold, we started on our way. A couple miles later, we got the “Reduced Speed. Check Engine.” notification, with the temp gauge redlined. Stopped and checked the engine again, and all of the coolant had boiled over and the cap was off the tank.

Spent 2 hours on the phone trying to figure out which of the 3 roadside assistance insurance coverages that we purchased was going to be ableto ACTUALLY assist before deciding it was time to just call the nearest tow shop in Google Mapsand keep receipts to submit for reimbursement.
