North Cascades National Park

North Cascades

Following our time in Vancouver, we decided to take a detour to visit North Cascades National Park, in Northern Washington.  It was on our original itinerary, nixed later on, and then added back in.  We secured a spot in Nehalem for the night, and did a late afternoon walk along the Skagit River called the River Loop.  It was a nice way to stretch our legs after almost a full day in the car (including over an hour and a half waiting to cross the border back into the US!).

We had fun playing outside, making a campfire, and roasting sausages over the fire for dinner.  I taught Quinn and Hayden how to play Farkle, and we played for a while.

In the morning, we got up and visited the Visitor Center so the kids could turn in their Junior Ranger books.  We then headed to the trailhead for our morning hike - Thunder’s Knob Trail.  It was pretty hot by the time we got out there, and a few of the kids (who shall remain nameless) struggled at first until we got into our groove.  We had some great views of Diablo Lake at the top, and then made our way down.

Family Goals Come to Life Coming home from our epic adventure last Summer, it quickly became clear that we just couldn’t get over it. I couldn’t stop thinking about how I had truly never been happier than I was on the road for those 60 days, and Justin and I so very frequently reminisced, talking about our favorite stops, retelling funny family stories from the trip, and daydreaming about our many pit stops on the road. And then two episodes with two of our kids quickly reinforced that I wasn’t the  only  one. The first incident happened one evening when I picked Grace up from her girl’s chorus rehearsal. Bend & Sunriver, Oregon

Bend/Sunriver Following our time in Crater Lake, we ventured 2 1/2 hours to Bend/Sunriver, where we spent four glorious days. Our first day was spent exploring Bend.  We hiked along the Deschutes River (quickly named "Da Shoes" by the kids), played downtown, and hit up the Sunriver Brewery for a beer and some snacks.  That night we built an awesome fire and cooked dinner outside and played some games. Day two was spent exploring the resort town of Sunriver on bikes.  What a glorious day!  We biked from the heart of Sunriver around the river loop, winding along the Deschutes River.  The kids loved being on bikes, and the trail was perfect for them.  We picnicked on the side of the river and explored a local park and played a few games before heading back to camp for dinner.
