PITTSBURGH, PA and FLIGHT 93 MEMORIAL

Following our time in Cuyahoga Valley, we drove a few hours to Pittsburgh, PA, to visit our dear friends, the Guarino family.  Johanna and I have been friends since our first day of school freshman year at Notre Dame, and it was so fun to visit her home and catch up with her sweet family.  We had her famous lasagna and the kids had a blast trampoline-ing, slip n sliding, and NERF gun battling, while we caught up.  We had a great sleep in BEDS, a wonderful shower, and hit the road in the morning after breakfast.  We are so grateful for their love and hospitality during our stay!

After leaving Pittsburgh to drive to Washington, DC, we stopped at the Flight 93 memorial in Stoystown, PA.  What a gorgeous memorial, and we had lots of fruitful discussions with the kids in the process.  We also swung though Harper's Ferry, West Virginia as our drive continued to DC.

Family Goals Come to Life Coming home from our epic adventure last Summer, it quickly became clear that we just couldn’t get over it. I couldn’t stop thinking about how I had truly never been happier than I was on the road for those 60 days, and Justin and I so very frequently reminisced, talking about our favorite stops, retelling funny family stories from the trip, and daydreaming about our many pit stops on the road. And then two episodes with two of our kids quickly reinforced that I wasn’t the  only  one. The first incident happened one evening when I picked Grace up from her girl’s chorus rehearsal. She was in tears. When I probed her immediately about what was going on, she replied, “Our director was talking to us about Summer Memories, and I just kept thinking about ‘Thor’ (the nickname of our RV from last Summer), and how much I miss being on the road.”. Bend & Sunriver, Oregon

Bend/Sunriver Following our time in Crater Lake, we ventured 2 1/2 hours to Bend/Sunriver, where we spent four glorious days. Our first day was spent exploring Bend.  We hiked along the Deschutes River (quickly named "Da Shoes" by the kids), played downtown, and hit up the Sunriver Brewery for a beer and some snacks.  That night we built an awesome fire and cooked dinner outside and played some games. Day two was spent exploring the resort town of Sunriver on bikes.  What a glorious day!  We biked from the heart of Sunriver around the river loop, winding along the Deschutes River.  The kids loved being on bikes, and the trail was perfect for them.  We picnicked on the side of the river and explored a local park and played a few games before heading back to camp for dinner.
