CONGAREE NATIONAL PARK, SOUTH CAROLINA

After leaving Charleston, South Carolina, we drove an hour and a half to visit Congaree National Park.  We knew we wouldn't spend too much time in this park, but had a blast exploring for the day.  From the Visitor Center, we hiked the Boardwalk Trail for almost three miles, which led us above the swamps and through the old-growth trees of the park.  It was humid, and we saw so many different insects and animals!

Congaree!

Boardwalk Hike...

Tree "knees" part of the tree root systems that anchor the trees in the wet environment.  SO STRANGE!
